Members’ Masterclass | Glaze making and mixing

Two consecutive Monday afternoons: 6 and 13 July 2026

10:00am-2:00pm; 1:00-2:30pm

For our studio members who are looking to develop their knowledge further in mixing and making their own glazes. Participants will mix, test and learn a more comprehensive understanding of glazes, learning about the function of the ingredients and process. This course will be spread over two sessions the first being making of the glaze tests, applying them to bisqued test tiles and packing the small test kiln, firing to stoneware temperature. The second session we will unpack the kiln and discuss the results.

Week 1:

Glaze fundamentals: members will discuss the function of ingredients, what makes a good glaze and safe practices.

How to follow a recipe: preparation/what is needed, weighing out and mixing the ingredients.

Discussion of the different ways of how to make glaze test tiles (demo and examples) and how to track results and the importance of labelling and keeping records.

Application to test tiles: demo of dipping, pouring and achieving a consistent coverage.

Pack small kiln with their tests and programme kiln.

Week 2: 

Unpack kiln, review and discuss outcomes and results.

What to bring? Please bring a good quality respirator mask suitable for dust particles (fitted with FFP3 or P3 filters) we are happy to advise if you are unsure so please do get in contact to double check. All other tools and materials will be provided, but if you have any ideas of what you would like to make do bring them! Wearing old clothes that can get mucky is advisable and please bring an apron.
